With its art style reminiscent of a 16 bit game from the Sega Genesis and SNES era, it is clear to see that Stardew Valley has been heavily inspired by the original Harvest Moon series.Īs you would expect, Stardew Valley will provide you with everything you loved from your favourite farm simulation / rpg games: a fleshed out story mode that revolves around Joja corp, a greedy corporation bent on the urbanisation of your quaint town, farming, animal husbandry, meeting and wooing local townsfolk, cooking and attending festivals. His game is a labour of love that has been ongoing for the better part of two years. From the soundtrack, to art work and coding. Making little noise and working hard, its developer ConcernedApe, might be the messiah every Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons fan has been waiting for.Īmazingly ConcernedApe is behind every aspect of the game. Yet under the veil of indie obscurity lays the apprentice in the form of Stardew Valley. This has further cemented Story of Seasons as the go to title for fans of the genre with no sign of it changing any time soon. ![]() The latest entry into the Story of Seasons series, "Story of Seasons" was met with critical acclaim and in March 2014 was the top selling game in Japan. ![]() So far they have failed to mount a serious challenge to the Story of Seasons series, and although its upcoming game (Harvest Moon: seeds of Memories) will grace the Wii U, PCs and tablets in the near future, their execution of the game seems lacklustre and doomed to fail. Since Natsume lost publishing rights in the west for the original series, it has now rather confusingly, started producing games for the North American and European audience under the name Harvest Moon. The Spice Girls.įor all these years Story of Seasons has been master of the farm simulation / rpg genre, largely due to the fact that no other developer cared enough to challenge it despite its popularity. According to Singularity 6, Palia is less of an MMORPG and more of a "community simulator," focusing less on the intense PvP competitiveness and more on bringing players together. The original Harvest Moon series - now known as Story of Seasons (series) - first released on the SNES way back in 1996, a time when crazy pants were all the rage and the world was about to be hit by a major disaster. While most MMORPGs rely heavily on combat, adventuring, and dungeon crawling, that will only be a fraction of what players can expect with Palia to keep the experience relaxing and stress-free in the way Animal Crossing and Stardew Valleyoften do. Overall, Singularity 6 hopes players will make a second home out of Palia and its neighborhoods. Building neighborhoods will be somewhat similar to constructing and designing islands with shared Switch users, but neighborhoods can be opened up to others outside of that community as well. Here, players will be able to initiate challenges, collect rewards, and take part in collaborative activities such as building their community with other players. Homes will be in a neighborhood, which is Palia's version of guilds. Similar to how players can set up Dream Islands in Animal Crossing: New Horizonsor simply open them up to other players, Palia will allow players full control over communication with strangers and access to player homes. RELATED: Why It Seems Like Every Game is Copying The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Lately Friendships and relationships require interaction and gift-giving, similar to the farming sim style, but unlike Stardew Valley, each romanceable NPC will have their own love language, and they can react to romance in a variety of ways. ![]() Players will have the opportunity to romance NPCs, a major element featured in many farming sims. Players will also have the opportunity to design the interior of their homes using extensive customizing options.īut beyond that, while Palia may take social simulation from games that specialize in this area such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it takes some inspiration from Stardew Valley as well. Similar to Stardew Valley, players must build from the ground up from destroying rocks, chopping down trees, and likely using these resources to build what can eventually become a beautiful, full-sized home. Players must work to revitalize their home, which includes tilling the land and starting a modest farm, perhaps for income. From the get-go, players will be pointed in the direction of a player home, but the land it's on has been long abandoned, much like the start of most farming simulators.
